BTL 1 is a steam engine driven, combined heat and power plant at Charter Sawmill (Chimanimani, Zimbabwe) producing 0,5 MW of electricity and 5MW of process heat. Charter Sawmill is part of Border Timbers Ltd., a sister company of RVE under the Rift Valley Corporation umbrella. The waste wood and sawdust that is produced within the sawmill itself (both renewable resources) forms the heat source for the boilers, which produce steam that is then turned into electricity. BTL 1 was developed by RVE, co-financed by the 1st ACP-EU Energy Facility (linked with http://ec.europa.eu/europeaid/where/acp/regional-cooperation/energy/index_en.htm ) and was completed in August 2009, within budget. The project was successfully connected to national grid in June 2011.
